Tech Savvy is a one-day science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) career conference designed to attract girls to these fields and inform families about STEM education and careers. Girls in grades 6-9 are encouraged to attend with their parents and/or teachers.
On Saturday February 26th, the third annual Tech Savvy conference transformed Trinity College into a hub for teaching and learning, role model inspiration, and parental engagement to encourage local middle and high school girls to develop interest in pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). 142 middle school girls showed up to learn about the ever-growing opportunities in the STEM fields by engaging in workshops such as “Build a Hovercraft” and “Make Your Own Android App” to increase their technical skills, as well as sessions such as “The Power of Telling Your Story” to enhance their interpersonal skills.
Mothers, fathers, grandparents and Girl Scout troop leaders were introduced to panels of STEM students and professionals to learn more about the type of work their daughters could potentially pursue, as well as advice on how to prepare their children for college.
The day concluded with a dynamic speech by Dr. Melissa Blake, a Pediatric Dental Resident at the Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine, who inspired the girls and parents to start preparing for the future today.
