On March 14th, nearly 100 high school girls joined with Gateway Community College educators, students, and representatives from numerous organizations and companies to increase their awareness of STEM careers, gain hands-on skills, and start navigating their pathways from high school to college and career.
We kicked off the day with a warm welcome from Gateway Community College President, Dr. Dorsey L. Kendrick, who reminded the girls that they could achieve any dream they put their minds to. This was followed by a "It STEMs from HERe" activity led by mentors from ManyMentors at Yale, who engaged the girls in a fun activity to "role play" many of the different careers available in the STEM fields. Then girls then split into several groups to learn about manufacturing in the "Ice Cream Stick Factory" workshop lead by Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology (CCAT)/Dream It Do It, green energy in the "Which Blades Are Best?" workshop led by eesmarts, and many other workshops lead by Gateway Community College educators geared to expose the girls to 3D printing, nutrition, chemistry, genetics, medical imaging and more! The day concluded with the "Navigating the Path to College and Career" session, geared to provide practical information college and career guidance information for the girls to pursue their aspirations in STEM.
